Update on Amaliah

Amaliah is growing! Her milk intake has gone up to 30ml, and her current weight is 3lbs. 9oz.! So we are very happy about that.

Lately, her heart rate has been kind of high though, and her oxygen kind of low. She tends to recover quite fast, but she keeps having little episodes like that during the day. She doesn't seem to be struggling too much or anything, but we can see the numbers in the monitor and the alarms go off when she reaches a number either too high on the heart rate or too low on the oxygen. So, I guess as a mother I tend to worry a little, but the doctor said that, since she tends to recover herself, that she should be fine, she should grow over this over time. I really hope she does soon! I don't want to worry but it's hard when those alarms keep going off.

This week we were able to give her a bath for the second time. Very few times we see her cry, and this is one of them, she doesn't enjoy being wet. We only give her quick sponge baths since her body is still working on maintaining a good temperature. She really likes the part when her dad gets to wash her hair, she seems pretty content with it :) Of course, he gets the best part! she cries with me because I have to scrub her... :P

Healing and how everything happened...

For those who don't know, we lost a baby girl in 2010 at 24 weeks of pregnancy. We named her Anneke Marie. At first we didn't know what had happened, we knew I had preeclampsia but we didn't know why (Here is a recount of what happened that time).

A few weeks after the loss of Anneke, I started having symptoms of lupus, and got diagnosed with it not long after that. I struggled with the illness for about half a year, but for some reason I didn't feel like I wanted to heal; I felt that God had a purpose for my illness. And yes he did, but it was actually my lack of desire to heal what he wanted to change in me. I guess I thought he wanted me sick, and so I was going to stay that way. But I was not holding onto His grace with confidence. Even though so many people were praying for me and asking for healing, I wasn't truly; I thought I was, but I wasn't really. And then, one day, I felt the Spirit telling me it was okay to not be happy with the illness, it was okay to desire to be healthy again and to ask for healing, and so I did that right at that moment; I asked God for healing. God answered in an almost unbelievable way (but that's a story for another day), and He showed me how to get healthy again through juice fasting. I only fasted for about a week, and started feeling better, the symptoms started to go away and then the lupus went into remission not long after that.

It was not only a process of physical healing, but also of spiritual growth. I grew closer to God as he showed me the mysterious ways in which he works and that he had a purpose all along. He taught me the meaning of Hebrews 4:16
Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
 and Mark 11:24
Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
He used what we went through to teach us the meaning of Grace. And he's still teaching us, it is so hard to grasp the true meaning of Grace, it is a divine concept that as humans we can't fully comprehend, it surpasses our understanding. So I am still learning and he is still teaching me, even now with Amaliah!

But back to the story...As my body started getting healthy again, or I should say, healthier, we decided to try to get pregnant again. The doctors said it was safe to start trying and in fact, a good time to try, since lupus is a flare up illness and it's best to get pregnant when on remission. I knew God was going to answer our prayer of a child if we had faith, so I had faith and prayed with assurance. We were pregnant again by August of 2012, we were so excited but we knew there were some risks, so I was under the care of specialists and we had to come to Sioux  Falls (which is about an hour and 15 min away from our home) almost every week for most of the pregnancy, which we were fine with because we got to see our baby through the ultrasound very often and the doctors could keep a close eye on my health and the baby's. I have to admit that there were a few times where I did wonder if we were going to lose this baby too, so I had to cling close to God and his faithfulness, cling to his promises. And, as you know, He has answered our prayer.

On Tuesday March 5 we came to Sioux Falls for our weekly check up, and thank God we did; I had not been feeling the best the last couple of weeks before that, I knew my lupus was flaring up again because I started feeling pain in my joints and my hands would get swollen during the night. My face and eyes were swollen too and I just didn't feel right. Our OB doctor told us she was not going to let me go back home. My blood pressure was high, they found protein in my urine, I was retaining fluids, had had headaches and changes in vision... all signs of preeclampsia. So I was hospitalized, they started me on some medications, a doctor came to talk to us about early delivery, they said, "just in case". We had enough time so that I could get two shots of steroids to help the baby develop her lungs fast, also "just in case", but we didn't think it would happen so soon. On Thursday my OB doctor came to see me again and she said "you are not doing good, you are going to deliver your baby through C section tomorrow at 8:00am". What a shock it was to hear that, I cried, I didn't expect it would be so soon, and never thought it would be through a C section. Now I am glad it was a C section, I didn't have to worry about labor, the pain or how long it would take for delivery. It was somewhat planned, it was fast, it wasn't painful and I was in such good care from the doctors.

Amaliah Joy arrived weighing 2lbs. 7oz. and measuring 14in. (38cm). It was so special, of course, I am sure other parents know what I am talking about. She was so tiny but so perfect in our eyes. I didn't worry really too much about anything, I knew the doctors knew what they were doing, I knew she was in God's hands and I knew there were so many people praying for us. I completely trusted God and as I was getting the spinal shot I was praying and thanking God for the wisdom he's given to doctors and nurses to be able to handle and care for life in such a way. Thinking of God's majesty and thanking Him made me focus on his power and made me feel calm and took away all anxiety.

I was pretty much tied to a bed for the next 48 hours, so I only was able to see Amaliah for a few seconds before they took her to the NICU, but I think I was pretty patient, I knew she was in good care and it made me feel really good that my husband and sister were able to go see her. They brought pictures for me to see and that was special.

We've received so much love from people everywhere, we know you've prayed for us, we've also received financial help, and we haven't had to worry about much. I am staying at the Walsh Family Village next to the hospital, a place for families of patients receiving treatment at the hospital, where they take you even if you can't pay for your stay. I get rides to the hospital by the hospital security. The hospital also provides 2 free meals for mother and father of the child everyday. Friends and church have helped us with food and gas for all the trips Josue has had to do, since he is still working and has to go home and come back almost everyday. God has been so faithful, we know that if we trust, he will provide in his grace. Sometimes it's hard to keep believing, a few times doubt came to our hearts again, but we had to remember, Jehovah-Jireh. And he has, we don't have to worry about the future, we know we are in his care. Everything will be ok.

This is the story of the special gift God brought to us, through it all God showed his mercy and love, he provided for every need through his children. We've been truly blessed. Even in the loss of our Anneke, we believe in the promise that we will see her again someday, and we trust, like David did.
“While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept. I thought, ‘Who knows? The Lord may be gracious to me and let the child live.’ But now that he is dead, why should I go on fasting? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me.” 2 Samuel 12:22-23
We know he always has a purpose and we know we have to go through storms so that we can feel his grace, and he's blessed us so much more, he has turned our pain into joy. Thank you Jesus, and thank you brothers and sisters.

Gracias Jesús, y gracias hermanos y hermanas.

At 32 weeks...

Whenever someone asks me how old Amaliah is, I don't know what to say. She was born at 30 weeks, but she is actually 12 days old. Every doctor and nurse in the NICU will say she's 32 weeks, because they need to know her actual age as to when she was conceived so that they know where her physical development is at. This way they know how to treat her and what's expected of her now. I like to know this age too because I know as we get closer to 40 is when we get to go home.

Amaliah gets physical therapy twice a week where the therapist checks her reflexes, I saw her today and she said our baby is doing good, she's doing what she's expected to do. She mentioned her "rooting" skills are good, I asked what that meant and she said rooting is when the baby's mouth is stroked or touched and they turn their head and open their mouth to follow and "root" in the direction of the stroking. This helps the baby find the breast or bottle to begin feeding. I was happy to hear that. So far I have been pumping my milk for her, every 3-5 hours... it gets a little tiring, but to be able to start breastfeeding would be awesome! So I asked the doctor when Amaliah would be ready to start trying and they said she could start practicing and we did! Amaliah knew exactly what to do, it's amazing how God equips them with all these instincts of survival. We only practiced for a few minutes, she's not ready for real feeding yet, they said at 34 weeks is usually when babies are able to coordinate sucking, breathing and swallowing. So for now it's just a practice until she's ready. It will be great to see that little tube in her nose go away!

Amaliah's weight is getting better too. She gained weight, she's at 2lbs. 9oz. so, a little over her birth weight, but considering she had to lose weight before she could start gaining, this is a good number. They told us they were going to start adding a fortifier to my milk to add calories so she can gain weight faster, and they started that yesterday. We are just waiting for her to start getting some fat on those skinny bones of her!

Big day for Amaliah!

This morning when I first went to see our baby girl, as I was trying to get in to the NICU, I told them I was there to see baby Feliciano and the lady said, -"Oh, they didn't tell you? She got moved to NICU on 3rd floor." So I went to NICU 3 but I didn't know if this was a good or bad thing...well turns out it is good! Once I got there I asked the lady at the front desk, and she said that Amaliah is doing very well so she didn't need to be in such intensive care anymore. What a good thing to hear! They are still monitoring her 24/7, but she hasn't really been hooked up to anything in the last few days but her feeding tube. After the IVs on her two arms went bad, they decided to just feed her through the tube on her nose and she has been doing well with that. She did have to go back to the light treatment for billirubin yesterday, but she's off it again.

This new place where she's at now, has more room for us parents to be with her, they allow me to bring my laptop if I want to work there, they have curtains for privacy for when the parents are there...and when I told other NICU parents that she was moved they were surprised in a good way, so that made me feel good :), means we are going on the right direction! Thank you for the prayers you've done for her!

Amaliah's milk intake has increased to 22ml, she first started with 3! then has gradually been increasing and her little tummy has been tolerating it well, thank God! Because she's going to have to gain lots of weight before she gets to go home...

I was able to spend a couple of hours with her, just holding her. The first hour she slept and the second hour she was awake, just looking around and making funny faces. I love her so much, it hasn't sunk in quite yet that I'm her mom.

kangaroo love ♥

We enjoy our kangaroo care time. I try to do kangaroo care during at least one of her feedings during the day. Kangaroo care is when we hold our baby skin-to-skin on our chest. The NICU staff encourage it very much. Doctors say Kangaroo care helps the baby stay asleep longer, spend more time being quiet (rather than crying), helps maintain their body warm, helps them gain weight, build a connection parent and child, and it's supposed to help with the mother's milk production. All I know is she loves it and we love it. If she seems uncomfortable in her incubator and is moving all over, a few minutes after we hold her, she goes to sleep! We like to talk to her and/or sing to her while we rock her. Holding her like this, is definitely my favorite part of the day!

tiny

Amaliah lost a little weight, but the nurses told us it is expected when they are born so young because they don't get to eat right away. They slowly increase her milk intake so that she is able to tolearte it well. Lord willing, she now should be gaining weight, slowly but steadily.

A Grandpa's Prayer...

I love my dad. Ever since I was young, I could feel the strengh of his relationship with God by listening to his prayers, and that made me desire that same relationship too. He has taught me to be humble in prayer but also that God is gracious and that we can ask and receive his blessings with gladness, even when we know we don't deserve them.
This is a prayer he shared today on Facebook. I love it. And as I read it, I joined him in thanksgiving to Our Father for his blessing of the life of Amaliah.

for amaliah
Amo a mi papá.
Me encanta.
